Suntory Hall, Tokyo, Japan, 1-13-1 Akasaka, Minato-ku, map

Pacific Music Festival 2024: Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22 with Till Fellner and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony — the Picnic Concert at Sapporo Art Park (July 27), the GALA Concert at Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara (July 28) and Suntory Hall, Tokyo (July 30). Tianyu, then 19, was principal trumpet; of the Tokyo performance the critic Kyosuke Hasegawa wrote that the trumpet was in a class of its own from the opening bars.

“From the first bars of the opening movement, the trumpet was already in a class of its own — enough to make a professional orchestra go pale.”

Kyosuke Hasegawa, on Mahler’s Fifth with the PMF Orchestra under Manfred Honeck, Suntory Hall, Tokyo, 2024 (translated from the Japanese)

Tianyu also played with them earlier that month, Strauss’s Don Juan.
